1972-1975
The 'Caulfield Grammar School' band.

1972 Nick Cave, Phillip Calvert, John Cocivera, Mick Harvey, Ashley Mackevicius, Tracy Pew and Brett Purcell are all attending a private boarding school in Melbourne, Caulfield Grammar. John (on guitar), Brett (on bass) and Phillip (on drums) form a band, later joined by Mick (on guitar). Brett and John are the main influential members of the band. They operate under various short-lived chosen-for-the-occasion names, like Concrete Vulture, Magic Pudding or Suffragette City. By 1974 Nick joins on vocals. The band rehearse (at Phill's parents garage), plays at parties and school functions with a mixed repertoire covering songs by Chuck Berry, David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Lou Reed, Roxy Music, and plenty of Sensational Alex Harvey Band, among others. They practice about once a month and rarely perform live. By 1975 Chris Coyne [later Blue Ruin] joins (on sax). When the boys end secondary school in 1975 the band fizzles out.

1976-1977
Proto- The Boys Next Door.

1976 Nick Cave attends the Arts department of the Caulfield Institute of Technology (now part of Monash University). Nick Cave, together with John Cocivera, Phillip Calvert and with new guys Ashley Mackevicius (then on guitar, now a respected photographer) and Nick's old Caulfield Grammer school friend Tracy Pew form a new band. Pew had been learning the rudiments of bass guitar from his best mate in suburban Mount Waverley, Chris Walsh [The Reals/The Negatives, later The Fabulous Marquises and The Moodists]. Late 1976 they perform live at a "Battle of the bands" festival at Burwood High School, Mount Waverley. John and Ashley leave the band and Mick Harvey (who had, after leaving school, worked at a tax office for a year) re-joins under the conditon that they would start composing their own songs.

By July 1977, after Nick had quit school, they picked The Boys Next Door as band name, which they would continue to use until February 1980, when they will move to London (UK). By then they will have played over 300 live gigs, mainly in the Melbourne area.

The Reals are Garry Gray (vocals), Ian ‘Ollie’ Olsen (guitar), Chris Walsh (bass) and Peter [no relation to Nick] Cave (drums), they play Stooges influenced songs. Ian ‘Ollie’ Olsen and Rowland S.Howard would in December 1977 form The Young Charlatans. At the party Nick Cave and Rowland S.Howard meet for the first time. Photo: Photos 1 and Photos 2 credit Peter Milne.

Note 1: The Boys Next Door are still largely a covers/garage band, at this gig doing only 5 own (fairly weak) songs. The Obsessions (Rowland S.Howard's band) pulled out at the last minute because they could not find a drummer. They were replaced by The Babeez [later to become The News]. A few days after the gig Rowand introduces Nick to Anita Lane, whom he was studying with at Prahran Technical Art & Design School.

Note 2: The gig was organised by Bruce Milne (then DJ at Swinburne University 3SW student radio). Attending the gig is Bruce's younger brother Peter, who in subsequent years would document the Melbourne punk/art scene of the late 70's/early 80's in his photographs. An audio recording (by 3SW student radio) of the concert was released on a cassette in 1983 and sold at (Bruce Milne's) Au-Go-Go record store. Later the cassette was re-released on several bootleg LPs/CDs.

The Royal Oak Hotel was located on Church Street and its Tiger Room was launched in October 1976 by famous promoter Laurie Richards. By December 1977 the name would change to Tiger Lounge. Laurie Richards went on to manage more than 40 venues, clubs and restaurants, including the Kingston Hotel, Beverley Crest Hotel, Crystal Ballroom, Tropicana Lounge, Prince of Wales, Bananas, The Jump Club. In 2014 Richards died in his Port Melbourne home, aged 59, after a bad fall.

Note: Bananas (run by Joe Gaultieri and later by Laurie Richards) was a little venue above Saint Moritz on the Upper Esplanade. The Saint Moritz was a dance hall that had been turned into an ice skating rink in 1939. Formerly the Whiskey Au Go Go, Bananas was the only place in St.Kilda you could see punk bands like the Boys Next Door before Dolores San Miguel opened up the Seaview Hotel for live shows in August 1978.

AU Melbourne-Richmond,Royal Oak Hotel,Tiger Lounge

Note: Wednesday night residency supporting Keith Glass. In December 1977 the Tiger Room changed name to the Tiger Lounge.

In 1977 Barrie Earl, who was a booking agent for Premier Artists (agency for booking and touring of contemporary recording artists, established in 1973) had just returned from the UK where he had witnessed the Punk explosion first hand. He badgered Michael Gudinski (Mushroom Records head) into getting on board the whole punk bandwagon. Rather than using his (1972 founded) Mushroom label Gudinski created a subsidiary label, 'Suicide', to see if they could replicate their own version of commercial 'Punk'. Barrie Earl sees The Boys Next Door play at the Tiger Room and offers them a record contract.

Martini's, opened in 1974, was run by promoter Adrian Barker, and was one of the first Carlton venues to add newer, punkier acts to the bill, such as Radio Birdman, Boys Next Door, JAB, Models, etc..

They record 5 songs (among others "Sex Crimes", "Secret Life", Success Story" and "Conversations") they are pleased with, but Suicide isn't. Instead they settle for one cover song, "These Boots Are Made For Walking" [Nancy Sinatra] and two originals "Masturbation Generation" and Boy Hero". Engineered by Michael Shipley [recording assistant at the Sex Pistols' "Never Mind The Bollocks" album sessions] and produced by Greg Macainsh [The Skyhooks bassplayer and songwriter]. "Sex Crimes" would later end up on the V/A:"Alternative Animals" CD/CDROM (Shock 2005).

"I don’t quite know why I got asked to do the Boys Next Door, but regardless I said yes and we went down to a place in South Yarra and got to work. They had never been in the studio before, so there was quite a lot of fiddling around. I remember Tracy had a strange kind of semi-acoustic bass, and Mick had some kind of Maton. Phill was quite proficient, and he and Mick were pretty personable, too. Nick was already developing that standoffish mood and attitude, even then. Greg Macainish interview at the I-94 Bar .

Note: Spred later became Teenage Radio Stars. James Freud and Sean Kelly [of TRS] would in 1978 form The Models. The Babeez around this time were Gavin Quinn, Henry Vyhnal, Jeff Rule, Jarryl Wirth, Julie Jordan and John Murhpy. Festival organised by Philip Brophy and Maria Kozic [both Tch Tch Tch ] and Gavin Quinn [The Babeez]. When the event was banned from the planned location, a church in Alma Road, St.Kilda, they just moved it to the footpath in front of The Babeez run-down weatherboard house on Farraday Street in Carlton.

"I can't believe we got away with it. Just set up a PA on the street and everyone turned up and watched the bands play. There was a nature strip and cars were just driving by so people were on the road, then a car would come along it was a bit like kids with a football you had to get off the road while a car went past. I'm sure the cops came past at some stage but I don't remember them shutting it down or anything like that [...] There wasn't a hundred people at it but I think there was more than 50." Bruce Milne at St Kilda Music Walking Tours.

1978
The year in which their first single ("These Boots Are Made For Walking") and the "Lethal Weapons" 'punk' compilation are released, they record one side of their debut album "Door, Door" and Rowland S.Howard joins the band. About 150 gigs.

June 1978
AU Melbourne-St.Kilda,Alan Eaton Studios, recording for their debut album. The 12 songs recorded are "Secret Life", "Sex Crimes", "Conversations", Earthling In The Orient", "Spoilt Music", an untitled Rowland S.Howard and Nick Cave duet, and "The Nightwatchman", "Brave Exhibitions", "Friends Of My World", "The Voice", "Roman Roman" and "Somebody's Watching". Produced by Les Karski (aka Leszek J. Karski, who later worked with Midnight Oil, in 1979 and The Triffids, in 1982).

Initially the album was recorded for the Suicide records label and to be called "Brave Exhibitions", but when Suicide folded in October 1978 six (out of twelve) tracks ended up on side one of the "Door, Door" album, released by Mushroom Records (Suicide's parent label).

August 1978. After Ian 'Ollie' Olson had left The Young Charlatans (for the 4th and final time) in June 1978, the band quickly folds. Founding member, Rowland S.Howard had in the past guested at several Boys Next Door concerts and now permanently joins on guitar. He's taking some of his Young Charlatans songs with him ("Whatever It Means", "AKA", "I Mistake Myself", "Grand Illusions" and "Shivers") and he will be writing many of the Boys Next Door's songs.

Note 1: The Little Cuties are a one-off band with Nick Cave (organ, keyboard), Mick Harvey (drums), Vicki Bonet (vocals), Pierre Voltaire (guitar), Rowland S.Howard (bass, rhythm guitar) and Genevieve McGuckin (bass, rhythm guitar).

Note 2: Dolores San Miguel took charge of the Seaview Hotel (former George Hotel) in Fitzroy Street from its previous occupants in August 1978. She agreed with the owner of the place, Graeme Richmond (vice-president of the Richmond football club) to start booking punk/new wave bands. Her first band to play there (on 05-Aug-78) was JAB in the Wintergarden Room (a side room upstairs). Then on September the 2nd 1978, Dolores took control of the ballroom (downstairs) and opened it up also named as the Wintergarden Room. Dolores continued to run the ballroom every Saturday night until it was taken over by Laurie Richards in February 1979.

Laurie Richards renamed the venue the Crystal Ballroom and operated it under that name until January 10th 1981, although Dolores returned in April of 1980 to run weeknight gigs in what she named, the Paradise Lounge (on the ground floor). After Laurie left, Dolores took on a business partner, Nigel Rennard, and they ran the venue as The Ballroom until a falling out in September of 1981, whereby Dolores vacated her position. Nigel renamed the venue the Seaview Ballroom and ran it till the end of 1983. (In 1982 Nigel Rennard and his sister Diane took over the Missing Link record store from Keith Glass and ran it until 2011). Dolores was back in 1984 but left in early 1985. She ran a few nights in 1986 before the hotel/venue was closed for business in 1987. More information in "The Ballroom: The Melbourne Punk & Post Punk Scene", a book by Dolores San Miguel.

"Shivers" was sold to Michael Gudinski (Mushroom) for $500 and shown on Melbourne's HSV7 TV's "Nightmoves", a midnight rock music show with Lee Simon, produced by Michael Gudinski. The band were refused to perform it on Molly Meldrum's ABC "Countdown" music television show because the producers said the song contained the unsuitable line "I've been contemplating suicide". They band were allowed however to perform it live on "Hey Hey It's Saturday" a children's Saturday morning TV show, hosted by Daryl Somers on GTV-9 (Richmond, Melbourne).

Note: Boys Next Door had to cancel due to Nick and Tracy's arrest. On the way from Melbourne to Canberra, 100 miles outside of Canberra on Hume Highway, they had been caught pissing from the back of a truck in full view of the wife of a chief of police. July/August 1979
AU Melbourne-Richmond,Richmond Recorders studios, record sessions for the "Hee-Haw" EP. Songs recorded are "A Catholic Skin" (written by Nick Cave), The Red Clock (written by Rowland S.Howard), "Faint Heart" (written by Nick Cave), "Death By Drowning" (written by Rowland S.Howard), "The Hair Shirt" (written by Nick Cave). As well as "The Plague" (written by Tracy Pew), which did not end up on the EP, but was subsequently released on a Birthday party compilation album. Engineered by Tony Cohen. Produced by Keith Glass with The Boys Next Door.

Photo: Photo credit Clinton Walker.

Note: Michael Gudinksi (Mushroom records chief) did not like the tracks recorded. The Boys Next Door's manager Keith Glass then signs them to Missing Link records, a label he had established with David Pepperell in 1977. On March 3, 1971 Glass and David Pepperell (music journalist, and vocalist of The Union) founded the Archie 'n' Jughead record shop in Bourke Street (later moving to Manchester Lane) which specialised in imported albums from Europe and America. In 1977 they changed its name to Dr. Peppers. In 1978, when co-owner David Pepperell left, the shop's name was changed to Missing Link and moved to a new location in Collins Street and later in Flinders Lane.

Note: In front of four to five thousand people, they were booed off stage."I can only imagine that Keith got us on that bill. La Femme opened that gig and they were on Missing Link too. I remember when we did that gig our band room was right up in the roof and there was this ladder going up to this hole in the roof. So Nick [Cave] climbed up there, and he said "Oh, you can see down onto the stage from here" and he walked forward and this enormous masonite panel fell away from the roof and crashed down onto the stage. So consequently we didn't get paid! (laughs). [...] I remember we walked out on stage and we wanted to alienate the audience so we started with "The Friend Catcher". So I started the noise and I waited, and Tracy was supposed to come in but he didn't, his lead was broken. So after playing this noise for about a minute and a half I stopped and there was this polite applause. They thought that was our first song! (laughs). Then afterwards, Nick and I were going home on the train and we were waiting at the station and these schoolgirls came up to us and said "Don't worry, we liked you, we thought you were good, even though nobody else did, it's okay ". It was like "Hey, wow but we couldn't have cared less." . Rowland S. Howard from on interview by Ian McFarlane (Prehistoric Sounds magazine, Vol 1 #2 - November 24, 1994).

Note 2: The band leaves from Melbourne Tullamarine Airport for London (UK) on 29-Feb-80 at 8:40PM and upon arrival change their name to The Birthday Party. In London, they live in poor circumstances and have to take day jobs to support themselves. They will end up playing only 10 shows (on borrowed equipment) in London in 1980. Despite the name change they continue to perform mainly Boys Next Door songs during their live sets. Only as of the spring of 1981 their live sets will consist mainly out of new, Birthday Party, material.
