Chronology: a chronological overview of known concert dates (some with setlists and/or ads),
dates of studio recordings, all line-ups and other trivia related to the German band Einstürzende Neubauten.
Date format is DD-MMM-YY.

-Information in grey italics is uncertain-

1979
The year in which the future band members first start making music together.

1979 DE Berlin-Schöneberg, Blixa Bargeld (1959, born Christian Emmerich in West-Berlin) finds a shop-flat in the Langenscheidtstrasse. The cellar is transformed into a rehearsal space. Blixa's former school mate N.U. Unruh (1957, born Andrew Chudy in New York) returns from Amsterdam (where he had studied for several years to become a piano tuner) and starts 'jamming' with Blixa in his cellar. Alexander Hacke (1965, born in West-Berlin, 14 years old in 1979) is also present at these sessions. At this place Blixa Bargeld and N.U. Unruh, together with Susä Hobeck and Bettina Köster (1959, born in Herford), record a tape which is later released on the Eisengrau label. The cellar space is later in the year also used by Mania D. for their rehearsals. Mania D. at the time were Gudrun Gut (1957, born Gudrun Bredemann in Lüneburger Heide), Bettina Köster and Beate Bartel (1957, born in West-Berlin).

Note: In June 1979 Gudrun Gut, Bettina Köster and Claudia Skoda open a clothes and design shop at Goltzstrasse 37. The name Eisengrau/Irongrey is taken from the colour of the paint pots which were left in the shop by the former tenant. The old paint is used to paint the shelves. The clothes they design are mainly grey of colour. By end of 1979 the shop is transferred to Blixa, who starts selling tapes from the shop, whilst the girls keep on selling their clothes and design. Wolfgang Müller [Die Tödliche Doris] uses the place to sell copies of his fanzine and the shop becomes a scene-hangout. A.o. Ben Becker, Fetish, Alex Hacke, Padeluun, etc.. show up frequently. After some time Blixa's other shop-flat at the Langenscheidtstrasse is no longer used.

1980
The year in which the band is officialy founded. Recording and release of the "Für den Untergang" 7" and several live tapes.
They only play a handful of live dates in Berlin with regular equipment and sound very much like a 'real' band.
At the end of the year they will play in Hamburg (their first concert outside of Berlin).

Line-up #1a (DE, Berlin: March 1980 - May 1980):
Blixa Bargeld (guitar, vocals)/ N.U. Unruh (drums)/ Beate Bartel (bass) and Gudrun Gut (synth)

Note: Their first concert. About 50 people attend. They perform improvised music to Super-8 films and sound very much like a 'real' band with Blixa Bargeld on vocals and guitar, Beate Bartel on bass, Gudrun Gut on Korg MS-20 synthesiser and N.U. Unruh on real drums. Gudrun and Beate were at the time also in Mania D. The concert was recorded by the band and later sold as a cassette in Blixa's 'Eisengrau' shop. All tracks are available on the "Einstürzende Neubauten (Live In Kunstkopfstereo)" cassette, except (*) on the "Chaos-> Sehnsucht/ Energie" cassette.

Note 2: SO36, a former cinema, turned into a Penny discount super market in 1967, opened as a music venue on 11-Aug-78 by new owners Achim Schächtele, Klaus-Dieter Brennecke and Andreas Rohè. By Jan-79 artist Martin Kippenberger took over Brennecke's share. All three sold the place in summer of '79 to Hilal Kurutan (from Turkish origin), who reopened it as Merhaba ("Good day" in Turkish) SO36 in Nov-79, booking concerts together with Michael Schäumer, Michael Voigt (Monogam Records/People's Records) and Burkhardt Seiler (Zensor records) as well as organising Turkish events, until end of Mar-83, when building regulations forced Hilal to shut the venue down. It was sold/reopened/refurbished several times throughout the next decades and is still active to this day. (More reading in the brilliant "SO36 – 1978 bis heute" bi-lingual book, Ventil Verlag, 2016).

Blixa Bargeld (guitar, vocals) and N.U. Unruh (drums)

Berlin Proberaum 1980

01-Jun-80
DE Berlin-Friedenau,Underpass pillar,band rehearsal room.

Blixa Bargeld and N.U. Unruh record "Stahlversion" (first 7" single B-side, a version of "Für den Untergang") and the "Stahlmusik" cassette album.

Photo: Credit Wolfgang Müller [Tödliche Doris], taken from "Hör mit Schmerzen", a book by Klaus Maeck [Rip Off].

Note 1: The space was 1.4 metres high, 5 metres in width and 50 metres in length and made out of steel. Pocket torches were used to lit the place and a Telefunken Bajazzo transistor radio was used as amplifier. The session was taped with an ordinary cassette recorder. Not to be confused with the recording of the "Stahlmusik" video at the same place, but in April 1981.

Note 2: "The rehearsal/practice room of Einstürzende Neubauten, lies "Unter-Tage" [underpass], half an hour from the last bus connection, directly under a very busy motorway in the south-western part [of Berlin] under the north-eastern pillar of a motorway bridge." (translated from "Geniale Dilletanten', a book edited by Wolfgang Müller [Tödliche Doris]).

Note 3: Exact location is where Saarstraße crosses the Autobahn (A103), at the Zehlendorf junction. The plaque (visible in the "Liebeslieder" film) was a mockup made for the film. They removed it after the filming, and now it is at Andrew's place.

One time, we were in this tiny cellar studio right beside the Berlin wall for three days working on 'Armenia', trying to get it right and getting so hung up on tiny details. Chris Bohn and Anton Corbijn turned up to interview us for the NME [published 05-Feb-83], and I remember the look of horror on their faces when they opened the cellar door and saw the state of us. It puts you in a weird space when you spend three days underground on speed". Photo: Credit unknown.

Note 1: "Initially, we didn't write any songs or rehearse. At some point, we got a bit bored with that and decided to actually do a rehearsal, but when we turned up at Trident we didn't have a plan. We spent a lot of time building tape loops, because there was no sampling at that point. We wanted to use the sound of a breaking milk bottle as a snare, but to get it in time we had to run the tape loop right across the studio around a pencil. We would cut holes in the tape, especially the big sixteen-track tape, to just see what effect that had. It basically created dropouts, but things were gone in a random way. We had fun. ". Mark Chung from "Conform To Deform - The weird & wonderful world of Some Bizzare", book by Wesley Doyle (Jawbone, 2023).

Note 2: "I put them in [expense studio] Trident, for as long as they needed, and I walked in there one day and they had the multi-track tape out [that costs a lot of money], and they were cutting holes in it. Score: Scan of page 6 (out of 7) of the score courtesy of Jo Mitchell and Mark Chung.

Note 1: An event with the participation of members of Neubauten (all but Andrew). A (non-musical) piece (for concrete mixers, chainsaw, etc..) written by Mark Chung and FM Einheit. The performance is stopped after 21 mins when the destructions get out of hand. This event was 're-enacted' (not by Neubauten) at the ICA on 20-Feb-07 under guidance from Jo Mitchell.

Note 2: "The Concerto for Voices And Machinery at the ICA came about partly because interests within the band had started to diverge. Blixa was a bit tired of construction machinery at the time, but Mufti and I felt we hadn't done it properly yet. With Neubauten, the machinery was more of a side effect, and we thought it would be interesting to expand that and focus just on that side of things. So, we were the driving force behind the concerto. It wasn't billed as a Neubauten show because Blixa didn't want to do it, and we had Genesis and Frank Tovey on vocals. But on the night, Blixa obviously thought, 'Actually this is quite good, I should be part of it', and jumped onstage at the end. I think Stevo jumped onstage too at some point. It was free-for-all.". Mark Chung from "Conform To Deform - The weird & wonderful world of Some Bizzare", book by Wesley Doyle (Jawbone, 2023).

The show was marred from the start by an unprecedented blizzard which delayed even the soundcheck until 10pm. Also, Einstürzende Neubauten had asked to use BMO's instruments. Einstürzende played a wild set, which included setting the stage on fire and taking a jackhammer to the 9:30's famous center-stage column; but a visibly wasted Blixa also started wrecking BMO's instruments. Einstürzende fled town, claiming they had no money to pay for the damage. Moral of the story, obvious in hindsight: never lend your instruments to German industrial bands that make music by banging on things!". End of their first North American tour.

Gareth had a state-of-the-art AMS [AudioFile, one of the first 16-bit hard disk] samplers [...] I think he'd been using it with Depeche Mode, and although 'Yü-Gung' existed previously and we'd been playing it live, the machine rigueur came from him. We had quite a long discussion about that track because Blixa didn't like being made to sing to a machine. The rest of us thought it was great and something we should absolutely do, but Blixa was, 'I can't sing to this, it's too regular!' It ended up as quite a big argument in the band and Gareth had to do what good producers do. In this case, take Blixa for a walk and talk to him. I suspect Gareth got him to give it a genuine try on the basis that he guaranteed it would not be used if he was not happy with the end result. Anyway, when they came back, Blixa sang on it, and everything was cool.". Mark Chung from "Conform To Deform - The weird & wonderful world of Some Bizzare", book by Wesley Doyle (Jawbone, 2023).

Apr/May-85
DE Berlin,Tritonus Tonstudio (@ Schlesische Strasse 31) & Monongo studios (@ Lützowstrasse 20). Continuation of the recording sessions for the "Halber Mensch" album. Engineered by Gareth Jones.

Note:"I happened to be in Berlin when Neubauten were making Halber Mensch. Coincidentally, Sonic Youth were playing at a venue called Sputnik [17-Apr-85]. On the way to the gig, I stopped off at Tritonus Studios, where Neubauten were recording, to speak to Blixa for a piece I was writing for some magazine or other. They were working on the title track, an a-cappella piece that necessitated recording a few different vocalists. They had some great singers from the German alternative scene coming to record their parts, including Ma Gita, who'd played in Abwärts with Mark Chung. When I arrived, she'd already been there for hours and was getting kind of annoyed with the whole process. So I cut my losses and went to see Sonic Youth, and then went back to the studio after the gig, and they were still working on the same part of the same song and had been the whole time. Tritonus wasn't a cheap studio, so you can imagine the cost."

"'Halber Mensch' cost an absolute fortune to make. Gareth Jones was working with them and really enjoying himself. 'Das Schaben', which is a nine-minute extension of Der Tod Ist Ein Dandy', was in many ways the peak of Some Bizzare. It's an incredible piece of music that took a long time to make and cost a lot of money, but the result is extraordinary. Would Neubauten have been able to make 'Halber Mensch' without Stevo? Well, yes, they'd have made something, and it would have been different and equally as strong, but it would not have sounded so fantastic. But then suddenly Neubauten were in massive debt, so they made their next record ['Fünf auf der nach oben offenen Richterskala'] much more quickly and cheaply. Then Stevo could no longer pull that kind of money from the major labels, and, with all the advances gone, suddenly everybody is going hungry and then that's when relationships started to break down between the artists and Some Bizzare."

"Yeah, that was the worst injury. It wasn't that bad. The funniest thing about it was I did that five minutes after the show was started. I had to go off, go to the doctor and get it stitched. The band didn't realize that I was gone and just kept playing." FM Einheit interviewed by d.n.l. @ Livejournal.

DE Berlin,Tritonus and Hansa Ton studios, start of the recording sessions for the "Fünf auf der nach oben offenen Richterskala" album. Engineered by Gareth Jones.

Note:"[This] was the one album where we actually rehearsed before recording. I think it's our weakest record, but we rented a rehearsal space for two weeks and actually prepared something for the studio. Obviously we knew that normally songs had structure, we just chose not to use it in our music. It was really more that we'd got a bit tired ourselves of doing everything without discernible song structures, and at some point we felt, Why don't we try that? And I know Blixa discovered structure with his lyrics, which kind of meant we needed to have structure in the music as well. But the main reason was, we wanted to do something different than in the past." Review: "So, as we stood in the line waiting to get in, the talk was whether the show would be over by the 10 PM noise curfew. We could already hear the band doing soundcheck inside, and the soundcheck wasn't finished until 9 (the doors were supposed to have been opened at 8 PM for a 9 PM show), after which we were quickly let in. The PA played some really loud music for a half hour while there seemed to be some kind of problem with the equipment or the band's set up on the small stage. Finally, at about 9:40 PM the five of them came out on stage as the taped voices of "Halber Mensch" blasted through the speakers. Blixa tried to sing along with it the best he could but the PA wasn't completely co-operative, cutting out, and they stopped several times trying to correct it before just blasting through to another song, their frustration adding to the level of menace already present in the room. By the time they got through "Z.N.S" and launched into "Yu Gung" there was an almost unbearable intense feeling to the room, like a huge black cloud has descended upon the room. Suddenly, at exactly 10 PM, the house lights went on mid-song and the PA was switched off and the band banged away on their metal shopping carts, steel heating ducts and whatever else wasn't electrically dependent until they realized what had happened. Blixa was cursing out the soundman in German (he was their soundman but the club's sound crew had hit the switch) and suddenly we noticed there were cops by the back stage door. The band briefly tried to start another song before somebody from the club stopped them. Suddenly the crowd realized that the show was over and there was a loud collective moaning of boo's." At first managed by Corey Rusk [of Touch and Go records], but quickly handed over to Cary -Scary- Safarian who brought in bands like Die Kreuzen, MDC, The Crucifucks, Bad Brains, Corrosion of Conformity, and many more, for all-ages shows with low ticket prices. Safarian tried keeping the hall under control, protecting it from the cops, the neighbors, the patrons and sometimes the bands. By 1988, the club was falling apart and mismanaged. Not long after an angry drunk smashed the front doors of the hall in with his car, Safarian left the Graystone and it closed for good.

Note: Rehearsals for the theatreplay/rockmusical "Andi" directed by Peter Zadek, in which the band performs live on stage. The band loathe the play (about a Hamburger youth shot dead by a shop owner), but loves the money they are paid for it.

Despite the fact that the rehearsal space has good recording equipment, in all the time they will spend in Hamburg the band will never record. Instead they live a life a drugs and alcohol enjoying the first time they have loads of money. They frequently fly back to Berlin with the free plane tickets provided by Peter Zadek. For 1.5 years (as long as the play runs) the band would not grow artistically, although they would benefit from performing live so often.

Mark Chung is the only one who would invest the money earned wisely, in the incorporation of Freibank (to administer the copyrights of music artists). During this period FM Einheit's daughter Amanda is born, upon which he decides to move to the countryside in Bayern.

Note 2: "We had a new album and single coming out, and we wanted to up the ante a little bit. Our promotor [...] came to us saying we'd been offered a gig [...] with Einstürzende Neubauten. I immediately said, 'Who?' I wasn't into goth rock. [...] I knew Stevo was a bit of an oddball, and he'd obviously got this idea for the most incongruous matchup of artists he could possibly find. I actually spoke to him and got the feeling he was looking to embarrass us, in a sense. But we agreed to do it, and from the word go it was obvious that we were the seen as the support band, and consequently were treated as such. There were issues with dressing rooms, our rider hadn't been adhered to in any way [...] and to put it bluntly, we were treated like shit. We were definitely the underdogs, [...] so we rose to the challenge and really kicked it out. It had the desired effect, and we proceeded to go down a storm. It was quite extraordinary to see that crowd reacting to it. The icing on the cake was, we watched Neubauten's performance -out of curiosity, more than anything- they couldn't follow us. We literally blew them off the stage. I spoke to a few journalists afterward, and they were handing out the plaudits, saying they didn't expect us to be that good. [...] Years later Time Out listed it at number 56 in their list of '100 Greatest London Gigs Of All Time'!" 1990
The year in which their 10th anniversary is celebrated with an exhibition and a small tour, followed by a Spring tour of Europe and a Fall tour (the 4th) of North America (roughly 25 dates in total). A year without recordings. The year they leave Some Bizzare records.

1990
DE Neubauten leave Some Bizzare records.

Note:"Initially, I really appreciated what Stevo was doing for us, and I could see that he was taking financial risks. [...]. But after the fourth album ["Haus der Lüge"], we knew what the sales figures were and that some money must be coming in, so we needed to get an accounting. [...] It took me a while to realise what a mess the whole thing was. There was no paper trail of anything, and there was nobody at the label who really did royalty accounting. [...]. At some point, after not getting any response from Some Bizarre, we hired lawyers to put a bit more pressure on them. And their lawyers wrote back and soon we were stuck in the English lawyer trap. It was chaos and it just deteriorated. [...] So it really fell apart after that. [The band said] 'We want the rights back and we'll put all the records out ourselves.' But they couldn't get the rights back, and at somepoint Neubauten just released the albums themselves, because they had the masters and they put it out in Germany. And then there were two versions of the albums out there, the Some Bizarre one and the Neubauten one, and then Blixa would say, 'Don't buy that one, buy our one.' [...] So the best thing they can do is get their rights back. Maybe somebody will do it one day." Marc Chung from "Conform To Deform - The weird & wonderful world of Some Bizzare", book by Wesley Doyle (Jawbone, 2023).
