Note: Free entrance show. First show with Warren Ellis. "At the same time my friend, Neil Wedd, began booking the Prince of Wales in St Kilda. He booked Busload of Faith on a Wednesday, the first time the PoW had shows on a Wednesday. At that point I decided I'd like a violinist and did James know anyone. He said he did and that [the violinist] just come back to Melbourne after visiting Europe. James got in touch with him and we got together the next day at my place. I ran a tape of this audition/rehearsal. I knew straight away that Warren [Ellis] was the right musician for me. I also thought that for as long as he was with the band I was a lucky woman. We only had this one rehearsal before the first show. I gave Warren the tape to work with and off we went. We didn't really have a full set but as nobody had heard these songs before we did the first one again.

We performed our first show at the Prince of Wales on the following Wednesday night and it seemed to me that half the musicians in St Kilda were in attendance. This scared the shit out of me but it was too late not to do it so we did. I looked out into the audience and wondered how long I would have Warren in my band cos I could see that all the musicians in the audience wanted him too. I already knew Tony [Pola] and all the Beasts of Bourbon and they all came along. After we finished playing, Tony approached me and told me that he wanted to be our drummer. Tony turned up [at the next rehearsal] and fitted right in so from then on we were a four piece."

November 1992
"I played in Busload of Faith and I was thrown out of them for taking a piss during the middle of a show, though there had been a bit of internal friction in there as well." Warren Ellis in Party Fears #19, 1994.

"Warren has said that I sacked him after he decided to take a piss in the middle of a show. Of course, I didn’t do that. Who would? I was pissed off that he’d taken a piss as I thought that he pissed on the band, the audience and the people who were paying us. He said there was friction. There’s always friction in bands. The friction was created by himself not wanting to be truthful. He just didn’t have the guts to say that he and Jim were moving on so he said he was sacked instead. I guess that story suited him better. I’ve always wondered whether Warren took a piss in the middle of any other show." Megan Bawden (Facebook, February 2025).
